Here are nine great middle grade feminist fantasies to add to your library. Payal Doshi is the author of middle grade books full of magic, adventure, and mystery. Born and raised in Mumbai, India, she resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As someone who was constantly pitted against their sister when we were children, I also really enjoy when these books have strong or developing sibling relationships, so you may see my list skew in that direction. REA AND THE BLOOD OF THE NECTAR is her debut novel and the first book in the CHRONICLES OF ASTRANTHIA series. Plus they have dragons, witches, and every mythical creature an 11-year-old Sarah would’ve been thrilled to discover among the pages of their library books. They have to be kind and courageous and believe in themselves, but also know when they can depend on others. Even though there’s magic involved, that’s not enough to solve their problems and make them the hero of their own story. These books feature girls standing up for themselves, finding their places in the world, and changing their societies for the better all while going on fantastical adventures and exploring magical worlds. Feminism is simply the belief that everyone, regardless of gender, deserves the same rights and opportunities - whether that’s the right to education or the opportunity to put on armor and fight demons. I’m honestly a bit jealous of the wide swathe of middle grade feminist fantasies available to young readers today. I grew up devouring Tamora Pierce books, so I’m a huge fan of fantasy books with feminist themes.
